My sincere apologies for failing to bring enough hard copies to today's class of the Class Questionnaire I would like completed (and submitted to me) by everyone ASAP. I have now uploaded a pdf of this document below for anyone who needs or wants this form electronically:
Download 2014 1st Class Survey
As suggested in class and in the title of this post, I welcome discussion in the comments to this post about the questions/issue in the survey. I also welcome discussion about what pop-culture references I can reasonably make without confusing too many folks about the reference. (Absent good pop-culture reference material, I will probably end up making too many sports references instead.)

As far as pop culture references go, I believe quite a few people in the class are Walking Dead fans. Also, new episodes of Dexter have appeared on Netflix and the show is not only entertaining, but also brings up plenty of criminal law issues throughout the show. Just a thought!

As to the pop culture references, I would think that many people watch Game of Thrones and if not they definitely should be! Plus Game of Thrones actually has plenty of crime and punishment that would be both entertaining and educational to discuss.

In reference to Pop culture references, I am sure many of us would understand any references made from the Show Breaking Bad.

I second the Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad references.
Game of Thrones especially dovetails nicely into the Foucault reading that goes with the handout, especially the torture bit. Does putting people’s heads on pikes at the front gate actual serve a useful deterrent purpose, or is Joffrey just doing it for his own illegitimate personal needs/for fun? There is definitely some commentary on how “the disciplines” arise out of the exercise of power.
On a more serious note, one of the things I noticed about both fact patterns in the questionnaire is the social stigma of the crimes alleged. It will be very interesting to see the range of ascribed sentences for both and especially what modes of punishment other than incarceration people suggest for each offender.

Some more pop culture reference suggestions include Harry Potter and the Hunger Games.
