Does your group have any specific issues/questions that you would like us to address prior to class?

The reading packet is intended to provide you with an overview of the various issues involved in sentencing women to death. We encourage you to think critically especially regarding the theories on why there is such a disparity between the sexes in capital punishment. Which of the theories do you think is most accurate? Also, do you think (especially in light of our recent debates regarding disparity in sentencing as pertains to race), that the disparity between the sexes is a problem (i.e., does it need to be corrected?), a natural and unavoidable phenomenon, or (see last article in packet) an illustration of what’s wrong with the death penalty in general? These are just some things to think about.
We will be covering history and statistics, as well as case studies of women on death row, current and previous in class.
